In the build up to the Battle of Arras, the 14th London (London Scottish) battalion of 168 Brigade, 56th (London) Division moved into the old British front line south of Arras on 3rd April where, from 4th-6th April, they were employed in digging assembly trenches. The Battalion Diary makes no mention of any casualties while they were working here but other records show that the battalion did suffer losses. Artillery action by both sides was intensifying as the battle grew closed and it is likely that Alexander Longmore, who was killed on 5th April, was a victim of shell fire. |
